How to Get Free Driving Directions

To start, select your preferred transportation mode: By car, cycling, truck, or walking.

1. Choose your starting point

Enter your current location, home address, or another starting point. This tells the map where your journey begins.

2. Pick the destination: Where are you going?

Enter an address, business, landmark, restaurant, or other destination. You can get driving directions to almost any location you want to explore.

3. Add stops along the way (optional)

If you’d like to add another destination or stop along the route, choose “Add destination” and enter it into the corresponding field.

4. Get step-by-step driving directions & Explore the route

Double-check your inputs. Once done, press “Get Directions,” and then you’ll see the suggested route displayed on the map and on the left panel with clear instructions.

Review the available routes, considering all the details: distance, estimated travel time, route showcased on the map, step-by-step navigation directions, and alternative routes (if available).

Tips: Don't automatically pick the first route, especially if you are not familiar with the area. Compare alternative routes, check live traffic, and review road conditions as well to ensure you pick the most efficient path.

Other Things You Can Do With a Map Besides Get Directions

Explore new places

Use a map to explore an unfamiliar neighborhood, city, or destination. It’s easy to discover nearby streets, landmarks, museums, and other locations and points of interest. Switch to the “Find a Place” tab, zoom in and out on the map, and you can explore many new things.

Find the gas station and parking

With the maps and driving directions tool, you can locate gas stations in an area. Similarly, it’s convenient to find parking locations nearby.

Discover restaurants and coffee shops

Maps can also be your travel companion when you're hungry or love to enjoy local foods and cuisine. Search around your current location, destination, or planned route to discover not only fast food and coffee shops but also popular restaurants and grocery stores.

Find walking and cycling routes

Maps aren't only for cars! You can easily switch to walking/cycling mode and find routes and directions for on-foot or by-bike navigation. You can also compare transportation options (by car, by bike, and on foot) when deciding how you want to reach a destination, considering other factors like weather, live traffic, and road conditions.

Quick Checklists For Better Driving Directions

A good route isn't just about getting from Point A - Point B as fast as possible. A safe, efficient route is more important. For optimal driving directions, please carefully check the route, traffic, road conditions, and anything you might need along the way.

  • Confirm your starting point is correct;
  • Double-check the destination and address;
  • Make sure you've selected the correct transportation mode (driving, walking, or biking?);
  • Compare alternative routes instead of automatically choosing the first option. Cross-check using different tools (Google Maps, Wave, Map Quest, etc.) if needed;
  • Check the estimated travel time and distance;
  • Check for live traffic, accidents, traffic jams, and other delays;
  • Look for road closures and changing road conditions;
  • Add important stops if available & recheck your route if you add a new one;
  • Locate nearby gas stations and other places if needed;
  • Use Street View to preview unfamiliar destinations when available.
